American Warrior – Garden City

Project: Business Planning and Entrepreneurship

Are you interested in learning from one of the most successful entrepreneurs in Southwest Kansas? If so, Cecil O’Brate with American Warrior has graciously volunteered to teach up to 10 YE alumni how to decide if buying a business would be a good investment. Alumni will work in teams of three to look at various case studies about businesses that are for sale. Your job as a team will be to determine if buying the business would be a good investment, and if so, how would you plan to grow the business. Alumni will spend time learning from Mr. O’Brate and Mr. Swender as they teach you how they evaluate whether or not to buy existing businesses. Each team will then come together to present their plans to grow the businesses to Mr. O’Brate and Mr. Swender.

  • Date Scheduled: TBD
  • Time Commitment: Plan to spend one morning or afternoon at American Warrior to learn from Mr. O’Brate and Mr. Swender. Then plan on working with your teammates at least three different times on your own. The last day we will all come back together for presentations.

Hutton Construction – Garden City

Project: Construction Science, Engineering and Architecture
Are you interested in the field of construction science, engineering or architecture? If so, Hutton Construction in Garden City is looking for up to two YE alumni to work with them this summer. The alumni will work together in a team to complete a market research project for the Southwest Kansas area as well as have the opportunity to participate in jobsite shadowing with a project manager and a project superintendent.

  • Date Scheduled: June
  • Time Commitment: Half days twice a week starting the first week of June (either Tuesdays & Thursdays or Wednesdays & Fridays). Partnership will last approximately six weeks.

Garden City Arts – Garden City

Project: Event PlanningGarden City Arts is a local non-profit arts organization that operates a gallery on Main Street. In addition to coordinating monthly exhibits, our executive director also plans community events and children’s workshops. The organization is looking for up to four YE alumni willing to help with everything from assisting with office tasks, such as filing and helping with mailers, to making phone calls and assisting with event planning. For those individuals who are creative by nature or artistically inclined, we would need help setting up window displays and exhibits or assisting with children’s workshops. There are a myriad of opportunities to be found in our little building. We won’t ask for a large time commitment. Whether you can work for an hour a day or an hour a week, we can always find work to be done.

  • Date Scheduled: Flexible throughout the summer
  • Time Commitment: Flexible based on the student’s availability. The Gallery is open Tuesdays – Fridays from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM and Saturdays from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM.

Tumbleweed Festival- Garden City

Project: MarketingOn the 4th weekend of August the west green of the Lee Richardson Zoo comes alive with sights and sounds of families enjoying food, music and children’s activities at the Tumbleweed Festival. This festival draws 6,000 plus attendees each year. The organizers of the festival are looking for one or two YE alumni to help make the event a success. Primary responsibilities would include contacting supporters for the festival, helping with promotions, working with the bands and musicians including the Saturday evening concert, and working with social media and updating the website. This partnership will give you the opportunity to become more involved in the Garden City community as well as network with business leaders and community members.

  • Date Scheduled: June – August
  • Time Commitment: Partnership dates are flexible but plan to come in once or twice a week. The main event will take place in late August.

WindRiver Grain- Garden City

Project: Job Shadow for AgricultureAre you interested in spending half of a day with a tremendously successful company in Garden City that operates with the entrepreneurial spirit? If so, WindRiver Grain has graciously volunteered to allow up to two YE alumni to spend a day shadowing some of their key employees such as Bob Tempel, COO and Kammi Hansen, CFO. WindRiver Grain is a grain facility and 110 car BNSF mainline shuttle loader focused on loading wheat and milo units to the gulf. They are a relationship-based company who takes great pride in creating long-term partnerships and delivering value to customers.

Garden City Area Chamber of Commerce – Garden City

Project: Marketing and Event PlanningThe Chamber helps to enhance the local business climate and quality of life in the community, and they are looking for one YE alumni to help with various projects throughout the summer. One of the main projects will be to help with planning the Chamber Wine Tasting. Other responsibilities may include assisting the Business Visitation Committee, help with the Chamber Golf Tournament in June, and maintaining the Chambers’ social media presence. If you are interested in marketing, the Chamber also needs help coming up with new and creative ways to market their Chamber Bucks, gift certificates that can be used at over 100 different businesses in Garden City.

High Plains Pizza, Inc. – Liberal

Project: Business Operations and Event PlanningHigh Plains Pizza, Inc. is looking for up to four YE alumni to design, plan and deliever a promotion for the Pizza Hut stores on Kansas and Pancake Blvd. The partnership will begin with a meeting with Kent Colvin where alumni will learn about the family history of Pizza Hut as well as expectations of the experience. The team then will plan the promotion and present to Pizza Hut for approval.  After approval, the team will market the promotion and help with one evening at Pizza Hut during the event.  At the end of the partnership, each student will present positive findings as well as constructive criticism from their experiences.

  • Date Scheduled: First week of June
  • Time Commitment: You will spend one afternoon meeting with Pizza Hut and present the challenge. The team has two weeks to formulate a plan and present to Pizza Hut. This will take place one evening during the promotion.

Economic Development- Scott City

Project: Marketing, Event Planning and Business Plan Creation

Are you interested in creating value for the Scott City community? Are you a creative, motivated individual looking for a project this summer? If you like marketing, event planning, or business plan creation, Youth Entrepreneurs has a Summer Partnership for you! Choose from several challenges that create value for Scott County, such as creating an event for Scott lake, helping the elderly in Scott County, or finding a business that would thrive in Scott County. Complete the challenge and present it to Katie Eisenhower, executive director of the Scott County Development Committee.
